Hotel Savoy is built on the site where the the Jewish Ghetto, Mercato Vecchio and church of San Tommaso once stood. Work on the hotel started in 1893 and, once completed, it was praised for its modern and luxurious touches — including central heating, an elevator and even electric lights.
